07.31.09show announcement: titus andronicus at modifiedSeptember is shaping up to be the biggest month for shows that Phoenix has ever seen. Last weekend I decided to watch Harold and Maude and have been listening to Cat Stevens quite a bit ever since. I'm sure everyone has heard him before, but I'm not sure everyone has heard this incredible cover by my all time favorite songwriter. On top of the events at Bar Smith on Friday night, I'm highly looking forward to seeing Band Of Skulls come through Modified on Saturday night. The band is a young one, having formed in Southampton, England in 2008. However, they've already garnered a lot of buzz and are the first band I've listened to that falls under the label of "alternative rock" in a long time. 07.29.09show announcement: kylesa & tombs at the setsSavannah, Georgia based metal band Kylesa has been one of my favorite bands in the heavier music spectrum since I saw them play in Seattle in 2004. Over the years they have become harder to classify as they have continued to expand their sonic realm to include influences of psyche rock, avant-garde experimentalism, and even some brief flirtations with pop choruses. 07.29.09video: yacht- “psychic city (voodoo city)”We premiered this track back in June and now we've got this video to share with you. The Portland duo has been one of my favorite acts over the past few years and I was incredibly excited when they signed to DFA, as I knew the label would help them further the vision they have. 07.29.09mp3: edward sharpe & the magnetic zeros- “home”Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is an LA-based band led by Alex Ebert of Ima Robot fame. The music they make is quite a departure from that band as it's mostly folk revival with a slight gospel tinge. The band fluctuates between having 10 to 12 members and tours in a school bus from the 60's. A lot of bands are trying to recreate the style of the 60's, both musically and with their persona, but this is one of the bands that does it in an authentic way. 07.28.09mp3: gaslamp killer- “anything worse”The Gaslamp Killer has a new EP called My Troubled Mind coming out on Brainfeeder, the label run by Flying Lotus, on August 4th. There will be a digital release as well as a 10" that is limited to 2000 copies, all of which will be signed. Here's the first cut off the EP that I've managed to track down. "Anything Worse" is a deep and glitchy track that I'd say would best be described as "sci-fi funk". 07.28.09iPhone digital dj appNew Zealand based company Inklen has created an application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to control digital DJ systems such as Serato's Scratch Live, Native Instruments' Traktor Scratch, and M-Audio's Torq. The application features a large scratching platter that will allow you to duplicate the experience of using a real turntable on your phone. Tonetable allows for advanced functionality such as scratching and pitch bending. I've gotta say this is pretty awesome and could come in handy in an emergency situation, like a turntable failing.
