Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is an LA-based band led by Alex Ebert of Ima Robot fame. The music they make is quite a departure from that band as it’s mostly folk revival with a slight gospel tinge. The band fluctuates between having 10 to 12 members and tours in a school bus from the 60’s. A lot of bands are trying to recreate the style of the 60’s, both musically and with their persona, but this is one of the bands that does it in an authentic way.
The band just released an album called Up From Below that’s been on repeat a lot for me lately. “Home” is the lead single and just may be my favorite track. I love the interplay between the male and female vocals on it and the use of traditional gospel sounds in a new way. Plus, who doesn’t love whistling in a song when it’s used correctly? The music video is pretty great as well, so I’ve included it also. The band is touring this summer, but currently has no dates listed in Arizona. Hopefully something will come up soon.
