If you are familiar with the Daptone Label you are familiar with the sweet retro sounding soul being pumped out by this label the past few years. Then there is Bob and Gene. Flashback to upstate New York in the mid 1960’s, two teenagers Bobby Nunn and friend Eugene Coplin spent their afternoons after school writing love songs trying to emulate their favorite artist of the period. Bobby Nunn’s father had a built a basement recording studio for the two teenagers and their friends as a safe haven from escalating racial and gang violence. The duo recorded enough material for a full length and released a 7” single on the tiny Mo Do label owned by Bobby’s father William Nunn. The single (“You Gave Me Love”) promised great things from this duo, unfortunately the William’s Mo Do label went broke.
Then in 2002 the single you gave me love fell into the hands of New York record collector David Griffiths. Upon realizing the full length was left collecting dust for 35 years Griffiths quickly looked up the Nunn’s to see what had become of the tapes. Nunn handed over the masters to Griffiths who, with his connection to the Daptone label, willed this album into being.
Here is the initially released single “You Gave Me Love” along with the track “Gotta Find A Way” from the nearly never released full length titled “If This World Were Mine…”
These tracks belong on all the mix tapes, oldies stations, and endless sunny Sunday afternoons of the world, on repeat. Period.
