Regular readers of this blog surely know how much of a sucker I am for garage rock and how thrilled I am with the strength of the scene over the past couple of years. One of the staples of this scene is Goner Records from Memphis, Tennessee. Though they’ve been around for about twenty years now, they continue to release the newest and freshest bands in the scene. If a release has the Goner label on the back, you can expect nothing but the finest quality.
One of my favorite bands on the label in recent times has been Box Elders from Nebraska. The band definitely fits within the garage rock template, but also brings in the sounds of surf and punk and incorporates some killer organ into their songs. The band is returning to the Yucca Tap Room for the second time in a year on May 24th, along with San Francisco punks Wild Thing and local boys The Plainfield Butchers. This is the perfect show for Tempe’s favorite home of free music and cheap booze. The PBR will be flowing and the music will be loud and fast. The show starts at 9, so bring some friends down!
