Fang Island started off as an art project between some friends for school. The members say they used it as an excuse to cut class and smoke weed while still getting credit for college. Genius, right? Well the band finally decided that their music was good enough to pursue the band full time and left the whole college thing behind. Lucky for us, as Fang Island’s recently released self-titled LP is one of the best I’ve heard this year. A lot of bands are doing the post-punk mixed with world music sound that this band is sure to be lumped into. But how many of them add classic rock influences and the overwhelming sense of fun this band displays? Also, how many bands that sound like this get to go on tour with Red Sparowes? The answer is none, except Fang Island. And the reason is because though this band could probably be lumped in with Yeasayer and other popular bands of the moment, they really are unique.
I just got word from Psyko Steve that he has booked the band on their way back to Brooklyn after finishing up the tour with Red Sparowes. They’ll be playing at The Trunk Space on May 15th. I haven’t heard word of any openers on the show yet, but I’ll be sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available. Regardless of what band gets tagged with that role, you should definitely come out to this show and catch a band that everyone is going to be talking about soon, if they aren’t already. Their live show has been tagged as one of the best going right now and you can’t go wrong in seeing a band who lives by the motto of “everyone high-fiving everyone”. Right?
