Freelance Whales have gone from busking in NYC subway stations and playing shows at abandoned farm colonies in Staten Island to landing high profile gigs at Sasquatch and Lollapalooza, all in less than a years time. That would be impressive enough, but what’s even more impressive is the band has done it even before their debut album has been release. That album is called “Weathervanes” and will be released on Frenchkiss on Tuesday. In celebration of the release, the band just premiered the first video.
The song is one of my favorites and shows what the band does well, namely dreamy melodies and harmonies and making you feel like you’re overhearing a bunch of band-geeks creating the music their teachers wouldn’t let them make. The video is simple and focuses on the best aspect of the band itself, namely the intertwining of all the members influences and talents into one collective mind. If you missed their recent show at The Rhythm Room, then we can only hope they come back soon. Until then, watch this video and pick up their debut LP on Tuesday. The promo copy I received has been on repeat in my car since I got it and I don’t see myself growing tired of it anytime in the near future.
