One of the world’s best DJs is back with another mixtape to make your pool parties a little more entertaining this summer. The superstar producer dropped the first edition of “Dirty South Dance” back in 2007 and it still gets regular rotation for me. The combination of disco and house beats with southern rap verses over it was definitely ahead of it’s time, as this sound is all over the pop music world right now. Three quick years later and volume two was released yesterday. The mixtape is available for free download in a variety of formats.

Just like the first release, A-Trak will be teaming up with Obey for a physical release of the mixtape that will be in very limited qualities. This deluxe pack will include a poster, t-shirt and physical CD in digpak format. There’s no word yet on when this will be released, but the collectors should keep an eye out as these will be gone pretty much immediately. Since I know you’d much rather actually hear this mix than listen to me talk about it any longer, you can use the widget below to preview it and download it. Fire up the grill and put this mix on!

It’s a rainy tuesday in Phoenix again, so here’s a little something for those of you that are staying indoors. Daniel Chiazza is one of those friends that you envy for various reasons. The reason I envy Daniel is his incredibly sick and ever-growing record collection. He put together this mix recently to share some of those records with all of you out there. This guy is a hidden gem amongst the Phoenix underground DJ scene. Here’s his description of the mix:

How do you make a show that features two of the most talked about bands in indie music over the past six months even bigger? Well, if you’re Stateside, you can add on a third hugely hyped band and create another post-SXSW showcase at the Rhythm Room. We already told you about the Cymbals Eat Guitars and Bear In Heaven show on March 22nd. Now you can officially add Freelance Whales to the lineup. The band is touring in support of their debut album “Weathervanes”, which will be released March 16th on Frenchkiss.

The FMF Mixcast will finally return this weekend. I intended on making it a weekly exercise, but running this blog mostly by my lonesome can sometimes get a little overwhelming. Especially when you’re trying to ease into a new year. So, I decided to launch a new feature here on the blog to make up for it a bit, and to enlist the help of the talented pool of local DJs we have in Phoenix. Though this new feature wont be limited to just locals, we’re going to start off that way. So here’s the first edition of Mixed-Up Mondays.

Today we have a mix by one of the best producers in town. Mercurius FM is always in his studio working on new tracks, and that’s evident by the high count of remixes and originals that he’s included in this mix. In fact, he’s working on a new EP right now, but took the time to put together this brief mix for our readers. We’ll keep you up to date about the EP as we find out more. Oh by the way, that photo up there is by our new contributor Dave Surber. He’s a wizard when it comes to iPhone fauxlaroids. Check out more of his work here.

Posted by Jake Goldsmith

Music speaks to me. It tells me a story I can relate to. It also transports me; takes me places that I’ve never been and may never go. Music is the sound of science. Music is the sound of the soul. To listen and feel music is to open up to possibility, to open up to wonder and amazement. I find myself longing to live inside of it. Strange as it seems, this isn’t an original notion. I’ve had many a conversation about the idea of being or living inside of a song; to actually exist within the place that is visible in the mind of the listener, a magical place where all is as it sounds-perfect. Heart beating, stomach swirling, hands tingling, mind wandering, almost as if love has arrived for the first time; this is the feeling that takes hold when a song sweeps you up and washes over you completely. It makes you wish you were there, there inside of the sound, inside of the essence of the sound. In fact, it almost makes you feel like you are a part of it, or it is a part of you.

I think this is because music is rooted in Mathematics. The Golden ratio, Fibonacci sequence, and set theory are just a few of the logical sequences that musicians have adopted and based their works on. Math is so much a part of music that even the worst sounding music (relatively speaking) has a mathematical language to it. Even when music isn’t approached logically (or mathematically for that matter), there is an inherent mathematical structure, or sequence that we humans may not understand we are utilizing. It is ingrained in our DNA and thus apparent in the way we manipulate our surroundings, including music.

The following assortment of goodies is an expression of where I’m at right now. I don’t really know what that means, but it is still true. Maybe it’s the numbers talking, maybe it’s the emotion of the tunes, whatever it is, these songs are speaking my language and feeding my soul. Not every song on this list takes me to a fantasy-land, but they are each important in their own beautiful way. Musically, they are a variety of rich, complex, whimsical, suspenseful, and nuanced. They are of course, mathematical and logical, but at the same time very emotional and nonsensical. Take the time to listen to each and every one (if you are interested in doing so), because if you do, you should not be disappointed. It is my hope that the math and the soul of these tunes will appeal to most of you, if not, no biggie.

Yesterday I said you’d probably be hearing a lot more from Troublemaker soon, but I didn’t know it would be so quickly. However, he just sent me over his new mixtape called Murder Beats Not People, and it’s one I definitely wanted to share with my readers. He wants you all to know that “It’s some serious bass music with “exclusive” acapellas and appearances by emcees Adam Tensta and Eboi, Hollywood Holt, Micah James, Naptron, Phoenix Orion, and The 87 Stick Up Kids.” I think that’s a pretty accurate description and I’m loving the mix of mainstream hip hop, Obama sound clips, and a ton of bass.

Next Saturday night will see the Phoenix debut of One Man Party at Cheap Thrills. The man also know as Steve Slingeneyer, the drummer of Soulwax, will be flying over from Gent to drop one of his DJ sets being talked about the world over. Since I’m so excited about this show, I decided to do another contest. You know the deal by now. Send an email to derrick@factorymadefuture.com with OMP in the subject line and your full name inside. You have until Thursday to enter two win two free tickets. And in case you were wondering what Steve does with a live set, here’s an hour and half mix showing off his style.
