Zach Steinman and Sam Haasound met while attending college at Oberlin. They were joined by their love for electronic music and upon graduating took a trip to Berlin to soak in all the amazing scene that city has to offer. They were so inspired by this trip that they decided to form their own musical project named Blondes. The two are now living in Brooklyn and have immersed themselves in the new capital of disco in the States, alongside countless acts that call the borough their home. While you may not have heard of them yet, I think this will be the year that their name is on a lot of tastemakers lips.

The duo delves into all different genres and disco and house. Some of their tracks ride by on a wave of balearic keys and whispered vocals. A few are more hard hitting and remind me of early acid house songs. They also delve into more straightforward pop and electronica sounds. Regardless of what template they begin a track with, it often ends up in a very different place and you’ll always be taken on a journey along the way. This is the sound of the past and the future intersecting and it’s the sound of joy and pain combined. It would be perfect for the club or for the afterparty at your house. Regardless of where and how you listen to Blondes, you owe it to yourself to give them a chance. Oh yeah, “Moondance” is just about the most epic space disco track ever.

I fell in love this year. No, it wasn’t with a girl, because my mom was right when she told me they were nothing but trouble. Instead I fell in love with a little band from Brooklyn called The Drums. And while I hope that band is good to me in the forthcoming year and visits Phoenix, I’ll just have to be satisfied with our relationship as it stands now. Which is mostly just me playing their record on repeat and anxiously awaiting anything new the band does. Luckily they were considerate and gave me a Christmas present in the form of the new video for their track “I Felt Stupid.” I suppose I’ll let you in on the enjoyment as well.

For those of you that weren’t in attendance at Modified on Saturday night, and haven’t had the pleasure of hearing Brooklyn’s The So So Glos, take a listen to this song below. The band is at the forefront of the Brooklyn DIY punk scene and lives in and runs The Market Hotel, one of the few venues of it’s kind in the city. The band plays a bouncy and moving brand of punk that features pop-punk basslines and surfy guitar riffs, pushed forward with propulsive vocals and lyrics that speak of both political and personal issues. These guys knocked me on my ass Saturday night. Make sure you don’t miss their next show here.

Music is often taken way too seriously by a large majority of us, especially those of us involved with the music blogosphere. So, it’s always great when an act like Das Racist comes around and reminds us that music is supposed to be fun every now and then!

These guys are self described as a “weed edge/hare krishna hard core/art rap/freak folk music duo”. If that isn’t enough to spit out, try the title of this track, “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell (Wallpaper RMX)”.
Crystal Stilts are from Brooklyn, but sound like they could be straight out of Manchester. These boys play garage-pop funneled through post punk, all the while experimenting with different sounds and instruments. I’m hearing hints of Joy Division and Jesus and the Mary Chain on these songs, but I’m also hearing 60′s organs and percussion that’s all over the musical map. This band makes you want to lay back and relax, makes you want to dance, and simply makes you feel good to be alive. Please come to Phoenix!
