Last weekend I decided to watch Harold and Maude and have been listening to Cat Stevens quite a bit ever since. I'm sure everyone has heard him before, but I'm not sure everyone has heard this incredible cover by my all time favorite songwriter. 03.15.09strange parallelPitchfork.TV just released a new documentary for their "One Week Only" series. This one is an unreleased promotional short film about Elliot Smith that was recorded in 1998. The video effects on this are a big hint that it was filmed around that time, and they haven't aged well. However, they only point out even more how timeless Elliot's songs were. There are some very intimate live performances throughout the 28 minutes, as well as some insight into the man behind the songs. Strongly recommended.

02.28.09elliot smithA friend recently loaned me a copy of the book Elliot Smith and the Big Nothing and I've been working my way through it over the past couple of days. I haven't read enough of it yet to recommend it, but I can definitely say that the man the book is about is one of the most gifted songwriters to ever walk this Earth. To a man whose memory lives on long after he did.
