11.23.09mp3: human tetris- “people”It probably doesn't need to be said, but Human Tetris gets the award for best band name of the year. Seriously, how awesome is that!? What's even better is how fantastic this band sounds. 03.10.09crystal stiltsCrystal Stilts are from Brooklyn, but sound like they could be straight out of Manchester. These boys play garage-pop funneled through post punk, all the while experimenting with different sounds and instruments. I'm hearing hints of Joy Division and Jesus and the Mary Chain on these songs, but I'm also hearing 60's organs and percussion that's all over the musical map. 02.28.09hot chip cover transmissionJoy Division is sacred ground for me and a lot of other people out there, so I was a little hesitant when I first heard about this cover. I've enjoyed Hot Chip since I first heard them, but wasn't so sure how this would translate over. I'm glad to report that they actually delivered with a very solid take on the song. 02.27.09friday pickAs much as I love No Age, I think Abe Vigoda has cemented itself as my favorite Smell band with this new EP. The band is moving in directions that I wasn't expecting after picking up Skeleton last year. The songs are a little more structured this time, a little more shoegazey, and I even hear a slight Joy Division influence creeping through. I'm expecting big things from their next full length.
