11.19.09mp3: real estate- “black lake”I haven't heard much talk about the Real Estate show that's coming up on the 25th at Modified, and that's a damn shame! I'm completely swooning over the band's self titled album that came out officially yesterday. It's one of the most refreshing and best executed psychedelic pop albums I've ever had the opportunity of laying my ears on. I'm really interested to see how the band is going to go about topping this one. It reminds me of early Yo La Tengo albums, and that's quite a feat to garner that comparison. 09.27.09photos: titus andronicus and the so so glos at modifiedThose of you who didn't come out to Modified last night missed one hell of a show. The night kicked off with a burst of energy from local band The OSS and never slowed down for a moment. Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of those guys, but I did get these shots of The So So Glos and Titus Andronicus. Modified was pretty packed throughout most of the night and there was tons of energy in the room. Hopefully both bands return soon!

09.15.09mp3: BLK JKS- “molalatladi”It's rare that I'd get the chance to write about a new band from Johannesburg, Africa on this blog, so finding one as incredibly talented as BLK JKS has left me floored. This band combines African percussion and brass with elements of prog, psyche, dub, and some serious guitar heroics. They're currently touring the USA and flooring every crowd they step in front of. Their new album is called After Robots and it's a work of art, like few other I've had the pleasure of hearing. They're going to be playing at Modified on October 14th with DJ Seduce opening ...

09.14.09mp3: the intelligence- “thank you god for fixing the tape machine”The Intelligence is a Seattle based surf-garage band that sounds like they're playing with a bit of a demented streak. It finds the band in fine company with a number of their other label mates on In The Red. This song comes from their new LP, Fake Surfers. The band will be making an appearance at Modified on October 9th in support of the new album. Their sound should transfer over brilliantly to that room. 07.31.09show announcement: titus andronicus at modifiedSeptember is shaping up to be the biggest month for shows that Phoenix has ever seen. At this rate I'm probably going to be broke at the end of the month, but I'll definitely be happy after seeing pretty much all the bands I've been wishing would come to town in one month. The latest announcement is that Titus Andronicus will be playing at Modified on September 26th. 07.31.09mp3: band of skulls- “blood”This weekend is looking to be a great one for music in Phoenix. On top of the events at Bar Smith on Friday night, I'm highly looking forward to seeing Band Of Skulls come through Modified on Saturday night. The band is a young one, having formed in Southampton, England in 2008. However, they've already garnered a lot of buzz and are the first band I've listened to that falls under the label of "alternative rock" in a long time. 07.06.09deer tick at modified tonightDeer Tick is bringing their patented mix of blues, country, folk, and rock to Phoenix tonight for an appearance at Modified. You can't ask for a much better way to start the week than a great show and some beer at Lost Leaf between bands. Locals Matthew Reveles and Gospel Claws will be providing support, with doors opening at 7:30.

04.13.09ariel pink at modifiedAriel Pink's Haunted Graffiti hails from Los Angeles. They play lo-fi music that travels between the realms of electronic, folk, disco, and more. They will be joined by another hot band of the moment, Vivian Girls. Vivian Girls are an all girl punk band from Brooklyn. They play a style of garage rock highly influenced by 60's girl group harmonies. Local greats Hands on Fire will get it started off. 8pm at Modified.
